We all have a VHL gene. When this gene is mutated, the body's ability to suppress certain types of tumors goes away. Someone with VHL will experience a lifetime of repeated tumor growth in multiple areas of the body, including, the kidneys, pancreas, brain, spine, and eye. Sometimes these tumors are cancerous, sometimes not, but in all cases, they are dangerous, extremely distressful, and disruptive. There is no cure.

Three and a half years ago, I had never heard of VHL. I had very limited knowledge of cancer or medical research, much less a tumor growing condition called von Hippel Lindau. But I was presented with the opportunity to lead a patient advocacy nonprofit into its next phase of strategic impact and it was one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.

I have had the honor of serving the estimated 10,000 Americans who bravely manage VHL, the dedicated clinicians who treat them, and the brilliant researchers seeking curative breakthroughs. 

I have signed up for the VHLA walk to raise funds and awareness for VHL. The money raised will support patients and their families and will fuel research efforts. VHL research has led to the development of 9 lifesaving drugs used to treat cancer and could someday lead to a cure for all cancers!
